When it comes to suspension and brakes there is no substitute for good quality effective components.
After years of use shock absorbers become tired and soft, bushes worn and loose and brakes can become spongy and unresponsive.
With even a simple replacement of these items with OE (Original Equipment) or OE quality items you can bring the feel of a soft unresponsive car back to a sharp precise driving car again.
If this isn’t enough these can be replaced with upgraded versions.
Suspension
Uprated shock absorbers can be fitted (sports, adjustable etc) to make your car feel alive when cornering. Uprated poly-bushes can also add to this affect by limiting the amount of flex in your suspension components. Station MotorSport Ltd retail a number of well known brands, but if a suitable product isn’t available custom items can be manufacturer in house or we can adapt off the shelf items to suit the vehicle.
If you want your car lowered there are a number of ways of achieving this, and we can discuss the available options with you depending upon the purpose of the lowering.
The first step is with a set of lowering springs. This can give your car a good stance and with the combination of uprated shock absorbers a good feel. If however you want more control of how your car feels and performs then adjustable platform “coil-over” kits are the next step, again there are there are different options available such as height adjustable, height and bump adjustable etc.
There are various brands and Station MotorSport Ltd can advise you on the differences between these, but the best source of information as to which ones will be best for your particular vehicle are the owners communities and clubs.
There are some vehicles, however, that manufacturers don’t make a suitable kit for. Station MotorSport Ltd can help with this, by using a combination of adjustable platform adapters machined in house along with springs of the correct rating and uprated shock absorbers (where available) you can give your car the ability to adjust ride height with uprated suspension.
Brakes
As with suspension there are a number of options available to you to improve braking efficiency.
The first step which is the simplest method is to upgrade your brake pads and discs with performance versions, something that Station MotorSport Ltd can help you choose / supply.
The next step along is a big brake conversion. Most manufacturers will use similar braking systems on the next larger model up. In some instances it is possible to upgrade to the larger version as a simple bolt on job. However, some require spacers, re-drilled discs, adapter brackets etc, larger wheels etc.
The final step is to fit a specific aftermarket manufactured kit. There are a number of kits available for most cars, especially performance cars.
Station MotorSport Ltd can advise you on these, although most of these kits will require some modifications to the car, such as larger wheels etc.
Older Classic Cars
For the older classic cars that are fitted with drum brakes Station MotorSport can offer a number of conversions.
The first simplest conversion which will add more power to the braking effort is a remote servo (if not already fitted).
The next step is a disc brake conversion on either the front brakes or all round. Some manufacturers fit disc brakes to later models which can be retro-fitted to earlier models
On some vehicles this isn’t possible and a disc brake conversion is only possible by using calipers and discs from a different manufacturer and conversion brackets etc.
Most disc brake conversions on classic cars will require some degree of modification to carry out and Station MotorSport Ltd can help with advise with any of these conversions.
One thing to bear in mind is that with a disc brake conversion your master cylinder may need to be upgraded to a different diameter to cope with the extra travel required.
It is also a possible option on older vehicle to completely replace the original suspension and/or braking system with either more modern or a custom system. We have done this in the past to a number of vehicles. One vehicle in particular ended up with a strengthened chassis to accommodate a custom double wishbone suspension system along with fully adjustable coil-over shockabsorbers, uprated calipers and vented discs on the front combined with an adjustable 4-link conversion on the rear axle in combination with a Watts linkage for stability, coil-overs and a brake disc conversion .
